“I have also used the knowledge to develop a manual to train media practitioners”

Obah Rose, #AFFCameroon Cohort 3 Fellow

“Thanks to #defyhatenow, I have upgraded my skills and learnt better ways to fight against misinformation, disinformation, mal-information and fake news. Before, I would never bother to weigh the consequences of these vices on the community and my credibility.

Also, the Fellowship has enhanced my know-how on fact-checking through proper news treatment before publication.

Thanks to the skills from the #AFFCameroon, I have trained many youths, men and women within and out of the media field on how to guard against the vices mentioned above. Many have continued to express interest in these domains thanks to my mentorship.

Also, it has caused me to articulate on the vices in some newspaper tabloids while also featuring in many programmes as guest to educate the audience on the impact of disinformation in escalating the current crisis in the North West and South West of Cameroon.

I have also used the knowledge to develop a manual to train media practitioners in the North West and South West of Cameroon thanks to WAA Cameroon. My newly acquired knowledge and skills permitted me to engage the Cameroon Community Media Network, with over 300 members in all 10 regions to run online campaigns against hatespeech, misinformation and fake news. Other organizations and associations I am involved with have also benefited, as well as invitations to share my know-how from external institutions. On a general note, it has been a mindset shifting experience for me and trainees I have come across.“
