Strengthening information integrity in Cameroon through AI-supported fact-checking.
Africa Fact-Checking Fellowship Cameroon #AFFC
#AFFC, the AI-Influenced Fact-checking Fellowship Cameroon, is the second season of the fellowship and launches in 2026. It builds on five years and ten cohorts of fact-checkers trained since 2020, and it takes on a changed information environment. Generative AI now makes it cheap and fast to produce convincing fake images, cloned voices, synthetic videos and coordinated false stories. Many of these campaigns are part of Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI), where outside actors try to shape public opinion, deepen divisions and weaken trust in institutions.
The fellowship brings together 20 journalists, researchers and digital media practitioners from across Cameroon. Fellows learn to detect and investigate AI-generated and manipulated content, trace coordinated influence operations, and use AI tools responsibly in their own verification work. Through hands-on training, mentorship and published fact-checks, #AFFC fellows help their communities tell what is real, push back on hate speech and harmful narratives, and build a healthier information space for Cameroon.

Cameroon's information space is under growing pressure. False stories spread fast on WhatsApp, Facebook and TikTok, and they can inflame tensions in already fragile regions, deepen divisions between communities, and weaken trust in elections, public health messages and the media. Generative AI makes this worse: anyone can now produce a realistic fake photo, video or voice recording in minutes. Foreign actors increasingly use these tools to push their own agendas. Most newsrooms and communities don't yet have the skills or tools to keep up. #AFFC fills that gap by training local fact-checkers who understand both the technology and the local context. They can respond quickly, in the languages people actually speak, and protect people's right to accurate information.
