#AFFCameroon Cohort 3 Educates Level 200 Students of UBa on Misinformation, Disinformation
Level 200 Students of the Department of Communication and Development Studies of The University of Bamenda have been educated on countering disinformation and misinformation within our communities. The over two hours exercise was carried out Wednesday December 9, 2020 by Cohort 3 members of the African Fact Checking Fellowship under DEFYHATENOW.
The objective of such a brain opening exercise according to Wanchia Cynthia in her presentation of DEFYHATENOW as an organization, is to mitigate the spread of Misinformation, Malinformation and Disformation in our community.
As to why the choice of level 200 students, the DEFYHATENOW team Bamenda opined that,
“We decided to take on level 200 students of the Department of Communication and Development Studies because they are making their way into the Journalism profession. What they receive as education is basically on concepts. We taught it wise to equally bring them the concepts on Misinformation and Disinformation.”
“Getting them grow with the conciousness together with the consequences of sharing information without verification, is assuring for a better media landscape tomorrow. Thereby mitigating those three ills that have contributed to the escalation of the present crisis in the region” they added.
Ajimsimbom Dieudonne Acho a student giving his impression on the workshop, said:
“We have learned a lot about Misinformation, Malinformation and Disinformation. With this knowledge, we are going to be ambassadors in mitigating these vices in our different social media platforms.”
The African Fact Checking Fellowship and DEFYHATENOW cohort 3 members from Bamenda is aaa made up of Rosaline Akah Obah, Maikem Emmanuella, Ndi Tsembom Elvis and Wanchia Cynthia.
